Topographies of dissent (SOLD)
24″ x 48″ x 1″ acrylic paint on wood.
Dissent is defined by its position – it’s a stand against the status quo. Dissenters risk something in the name of a bigger goal like equality or justice.
Have you watched the protests across Russia this past week? They’re dissenting against Putin and his war on Ukraine by protesting in the streets. That’s some seriously brave dissenting!
Dissent is messy, noisy, inconvenient, and costly. It bears different surface features and tactics across time and space – I like to think of these as topographies of dissent.
And dissent is also always vital to humanity because it drives social change. I sure hope that’s the case in Russia.
